This is a book for Geeks only. I first read this book several years ago (I am of an age where time flies and I have difficulty figuring when I did something) and have picked it up again. I love the book.Great book if you want to know how panics evolve. Some serious background in banking and money would be helpful.
The detailed analysis of the precursors to the Panic are really well done. And it shows that there is nothing new under the sun. The Argentinian real estate bubble in the late 1880s (one of the many causes) reads like the sub-prime bust in the US in the mid-2000s.
P.S. The kindle version is a bit if a pain to read, however. It is a scan of the original. Hard to follow when there are footnotes, particularly when a long one flows on to the next page as it is not clear where the pages end and begin.

The Causes of the Panic of 1893 Classic Reprint William Jett Lauck 9781333649494 Books Reviews
This book's information was not only helpful to understanding the causes of the 1893 panic, but also understanding the way America was developed even with an undependable money supply which seemed to be a problem every other year. One can make out the similarities and the dissimilarities between 1893 and the 2008 subprime collapse. The book was laid out and information was organized in much the same way that Milton's Friedman organized his Monetary History of the United States. This book is a must read for those like me who are interested in frenzies and financial panics throughout history.
If you want to read about the 2008 financial crisis and how it went down in 1893, this is your book. Hmm...over a hundred years have gone by and we still have the same crisis. One would think this might be manipulated?!!! The year 1893, and not one reference to the most influential, powerful financier J.P. Morgan?! This is a 100 page book, and the author spends 90% of the time talking about financial conditions outside of the U.S.. Then on P.92 unbelievably says, "it is not necessary to go beyond the borders of this country in search of an explanation of the calamity". Talk about anti-climatic!
